Hī-sama is the wise woman in Princess Mononoke, a film directed by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. She was voiced by Mitsuko Mori in the Japanese version and Debi Derryberry in the English version. She is the elder and shaman of the Emishi Village.[1]
Plot[]
She is first seen after Nago's attack. She carries hot water in a jar, which Kaya pours on Ashitaka's arm. Then she bows to Nago and she pleads to him not to pour his anger on the village.
She finds a bullet in Nago's body and believes that it is the reason Nago became a demon. Ashitaka has to leave the village to find a cure for the curse on his arm. Hī-sama's diagnosis is that Ashitaka will die from that curse the same way Nago did.
Quotes[]
"You can not alter your fate, my prince Ashitaka, but you can rise to meet it, if you so choose."
—Hī-sama
Trivia[]
The emblem of the Emishi can be found on the front and back of her clothing.
