Trivia[]

  • Along with other two elders from Shikoku and Danzaburō of Sado, Inugami Gyōbu is one of the most famous and powerful tanukis in Japanese folklores, and Inugami Gyōbu is sometimes regarded as one of the most powerful yokai and as an animal who became a god.
  • Although he is a tanuki, he has sharp features which make him resemble a dog or a wolf. This is possibly a reference to his name Inugami which sounds the same as "Inugami" (犬神, lit. "dog god"), dog / wolf spirits notably known in folklore and local religions in Shikoku.
  • When he passed away, he was taken to the afterlife by Buddhism Deities. This scene was inspired by Raigō which Isao Takahata also used for the climax of The Tale of the Princess Kaguya when Celestial Beings appeared to take Kaguya.
