Kiyomasa Ōiwa is a minor character in When Marnie Was There directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi of Studio Ghibli. He is voiced by Susumu Terajima.

Family[]

He has two offsprings with his wife Setsu Oiwa, Kissakibetsu. One of them is an adult daughter working as a yoga teacher in Tokyo while he and his wife remained in the small town. His works as a carpenter and likes to make owls while his wife and adopted niece Anna Sasaki do the cooking and harvesting. He seems to be fond of Anna and doesn't seem to understand why Yoriko gets so worried about her.

Personality[]

He is talkative and caring like his wife. He often talks positively about other people (except Mrs. Kadoya). He even teases Anna by saying the silo and Marsh house are the home of ghosts (unaware that there is some truth in that). Like his wife, Kiyomasa doesn't make a big deal out of Anna's issues until it seems like a serious problem and when that happens he remains calm.

Relatives[]

Etymology[]

  • The name Kiyomasa means "clear, pure, clean" (清) (kiyo) and "right, proper" (正) (masa).
  • Kiyomasa's surname Ōiwa means "big, great" (大) (o) and "rock" (岩) (iwa).

Trivia[]

  • Kiyomasa doesn't like Nobuko Kadoya's mother to the point where he has his wife deliver to her the things she hired him to make for her. He even claims that he is "allergic" to Mrs. Kadoya.
