Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color (ガラクタ名作劇場 ラクガキ王国, Garakuta Meisaku Gekijō Rakugaki Ōkoku) is a PlayStation 2 role-playing game developed and released by Taito in 2002. Studio Ghibli collaborated with Taito during development, most notably on the ending cutscene.

Overview[]

A role-playing game in which player's control and nurture a "Doodle" avatar. A Doodle is brought to life in 3D via the player painting on-screen.

When players begin the game they can only draw Doodle's torso, but can unlock drawing the arms and legs after competing in tournaments. Players can also obtain various colors for customization. Doodles' abilities can also be modified depending on their shape and color, so experimentation is needed.

The game is set in an area called the "Junk Market". The player-protagonist awakens in a strange vacant lot where they make friends after they show off their scribbling skills. After a brief tutorial, players are then allowed to participate in a scribble competition. There they face an "empire" who uses the power of scribbling for its own nefarious purposes.

Behind the Scenes[]

Yoshiharu Sato, one of the key animators behind My Neighbor Totoro (1988), was hired as art director for the game. He oversaw all character designs and backgrounds. In addition, many animators from Studio Ghibli were also involved in this project.
