Matsuko Yamada (山田 まつ子, Yamada Matsuko) is the wife of Takashi Yamada and the mother of Noboru Yamada and Nonoko Yamada in the film My Neighbors the Yamadas.

Etymology[]

  • The name Matsuko is written in kanji/hiragana (まつ子), which has no special meaning except the kanji "子" means "child". However, when part of the name Matsu is written in kanji (松, 末津, 真津 or 麻津), it could possibly mean:
    • 松 - "pine tree, fir tree".
    • 末津 - "end, close, tip, powder, posterity" (末) (ma) and "haven, port, harbor, ferry" (津) (tsu).
    • 真津 - "real, genuine" (真) (ma) and "haven, port, harbor, ferry" (津) (tsu).
    • 麻津 - "hemp, flax" (麻) (ma) and "haven, port, harbor, ferry" (津) (tsu).
  • Matsuko's surname Yamada means "mountain, hill" (山) (yama) and "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta/da).
